Illinois earns the 7th seed in the Big Ten Softball Tournament

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – With regular season play complete, the Big Ten Conference announced the 2016 Big Ten Softball Tournament bracket on Sunday (May 8), with Illinois earning the No. 7 seed in the tournament.

The Illini will face No. 10 Michigan State on Thursday (May 12) at 1:30 p.m. CT in the Nittany Lion Softball Park in University Park, Pa.

The tournament is a single-elimination format that will begin on Thursday with the title contest slated for Saturday night at Beard Field on the campus of Penn State. The tournament champion will earn the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

The top four seeds received byes into Friday’s quarterfinals, while four first-round games will be played on Thursday. Minnesota, Northwestern and Penn State join Michigan with byes to the quarterfinals, as the Wolverines earned the outright title and the No. 1 seed. The Gophers are the No. 2 seed, the Wildcats are the third seed and the Nittany Lions are the No. 4 seed.

First pitch of the tournament is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on Thursday when No. 6 Ohio State takes on No. 11 Rutgers, with the winner facing the Wildcats on Friday. At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, the No. 7 Illini will battle No. 10 Michigan State, with the winner advancing to face Minnesota in Friday’s quarterfinal. No. 5 Nebraska challenges No. 12 Purdue at approximately 4:30 p.m. Thursday, with Penn State awaiting the first-round winner. In Thursday’s final contest at 7 p.m., No. 8 Wisconsin faces No. 9 Indiana for the right to face Michigan on Friday evening.

Friday’s quarterfinal round will begin at 11 a.m., with four games determining the semifinalists. The first semifinal is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, with the second semifinal scheduled for 2:30 p.m. First pitch for Saturday’s championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
