Seven Newcomers to Join Buckeye Hockey Squad this Fall

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Seven newcomers are set to join the Ohio State men’s hockey program in the fall, Steve Rohlik, Ohio State head coach, announced. Defensemen Wyatt Ege, Matt Miller and Gordi Myer and goalie Sean Romeo will join forwards Ronnie Hein, Tanner Laczynski and Sam McCormick who signed National Letters of Intent in the fall in the Class of 2016. The group includes two Ohio natives and players from Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

“We are excited to welcome these seven players to our program,” Rohlik said. “They each contribute different qualities we are looking for in our lineup. They understand what it means to be a Buckeye and will make great additions to our team.”

Wyatt Ege

Defenseman, 5-11, 176

Alaska Anchorage (WCHA)/Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL)

Elk River, Minn.

Skated in all 34 games with Alaska Anchorage in 2015-16, posting 13 points on four goals and nine assists … earned a spot on the WCHA All-Rookie Team … spent 2014-15 with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL and recorded a 3-21-24 line … NAHL All-Rookie Team selection while playing with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in 2013-14; had 20 points, including 17 assists, in 59 regular season games … skated in 14 playoff games for the Ice Dogs and had four goals and three assists for seven points as the team won the Robertson Cup championship … will sit out 2016-17 per NCAA transfer rules and has three years of eligibility remaining.

Youngstown Phantoms (USHL)

Spent last three seasons with Youngstown in the USHL … skated in 56 games for Youngstown in 2015-16, scoring seven goals and adding six assists for 13 points while serving as an assistant captain … 13 points, on four goals and nine assists, in 52 games during 2014-15 … seven assists in 56 games during first full year with the Phantoms in 2012-14 … played three games for the Phantoms in 2012-13 and skated in five contests with the USHL Des Moines Buccaneers in 2011-12 … played for Detroit Compuware and Pittsburgh Hornets organizations … brother J.T. Miller plays for the New York Rangers.

Gordi Myer

Green Bay Gamblers (USHL)

Toledo, Ohio

Skated in 59 games with Green Bay in 2015-16, posting 15 assists and scoring three goals for 18 points, along with a +13 rating … played in the Gamblers’ four Clark Cup playoff games … started 2014-15 in Tri-City, playing in 32 games … ended year with Green Bay and had six assists in 15 outings … played in Cleveland Barons program and served as an assistant captain with Barons’ U18 team in 2013-14.

Sean Romeo

Maine (Hockey East)/Youngstown Phantoms (USHL)

Cary, N.C.

Played for Maine the last two years … saw action in two games in 2015-16, with a 2.27 goals-against average and .933 save percentage … started 21 of 23 games played as a freshman in 2014-15, posting a 3.04 goals-against average and .902 save percentage  … spent three seasons with Youngstown in the USHL … assistant captain for Youngstown in 2013-14 and posted a 3.42 goals against average and .891 save percentage in 30 games … saw action in 53 games in 2012-13 and had a 2.75 goals-against average and .910 save percentage, along with nine playoff appearances, posting a 2.36 goals-against average and .905 save percentage in the postseason … first year with Youngstown was 2011-12 and had a 3.32 goals-against average and .900 save percentage in 16 games played … played in the Jr. Hurricanes program growing up… will sit out 2016-17 per NCAA transfer rules and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Spent last two seasons with Waterloo Black Hawks in the USHL and had 49 points, with 14 goals and 35 assists, in 57 regular season games … squad is currently playing in the USHL Clark Cup conference finals … six points (3g, 3a) through the team’s first eight playoff games … team captain for the Black Hawks … began 2014-15 with the Aberdeen Wings in the NAHL, scoring 17 points on eight goals and nine assists in 33 games, before moving to the USHL Black Hawks; saw action in 33 games and had 21 points, with 11 goals and 10 assists … played two NAHL games with the Corpus Christi IceRays in 2013-14 … member of the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL) Lansing Capitals before joining the Aberdeen Wings, posting 30 points (16 goals, 14 assists) in 23 games with the Capitals.

Finished regular season fourth in scoring in the USHL with 63 points, scoring 24 goals and adding 39 assists … started season with Chicago Steel, serving as an alternate captain, and had 40 points, on 13 goals and 27 assists, in 52 games … ended year with Lincoln Storm and had 23 points (19g, 11a) in 19 regular season games … ranked 99th on NHL Central Scouting North American Skater list in April … chosen for USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January … competed with the U.S. Junior Select Team at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge … 2015 USHL All-Rookie Second Team honoree after posting 28 points, with 18 goals and 28 assists, in 57 regular season games … skated in two games for the Steel in2013-14 … 2014 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game participant and played in 2015 USHL/NHL Top Prospects game in January 2015 … named 2015 Junior Club World Cup Best Forward in late August after posting a goal and seven assists for eight points in the tournament … skated for Team USA in 2015 Hlinka Memorial Tournament … played for Chicago Mission organization and won 16U national championship.

Posted 57 points, on 32 goals and 25 assists, in 2015-16 regular season to rank eighth among USHL scorers … started year with the Madison Capitols, skating in 47 games and picking up 42 points on 24 goals and 18 assists … traded to the Waterloo Black Hawks to close the year and had 15 points, with eight goals and seven helpers, in 14 regular season games … the Black Hawks are currently playing in the USHL Clark Cup conference finals; had five points (3g, 2a) in first eight playoff games … skated in 60 regular season games for the Capitols in 2014-15, recording 15 goals, 16 assists and 31 points … skated in one game for USHL Sioux City Musketeers in 2013-14 … played for Notre Dame High Academy and Team Wisconsin … 65 points (26 goals, 39 assists) in 24 regular season games in final season with Notre Dame Academy in 2013-14 … squad reached state semifinals each of his last three years and won title in 2012 … brother, Max, played for the Buckeyes from 2012-14 and made his NHL debut in 2015-16 with the Ottawa Senators.
