Brandon, MB. – Western Manitoba hockey fans are invited to attend a special “Welcome Home” rally for the 2016 Western Hockey League Champion Brandon Wheat Kings later today.

The Wheat Kings, who defeated Seattle 8-4 Friday night to clinch their first WHL Championship in twenty years, will arrive in Brandon this afternoon and will be delivered to the Keystone Centre.

Fans are encouraged to come out to the UCT Pavillion from 5-7pm to meet the players, coaches and one very special guest – the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Because the Wheat Kings won last night’s victory in Kent, Washington, Saturday’s rally will give local fans the opportunity to come out, meet the players and join in the Championship celebration.

There will be music, food, drink and autographs for the entire family!

This was Brandon’s third WHL Title since joining the Western Canada Hockey League in 1967 but the first since they defeated Spokane to capture the 1996 Championship.

The Wheat Kings first Cup win came in 1979 when they defeated the Winterhawks in Portland.

Brandon will now represent the WHL as Champions at the MasterCard Memorial Cup, scheduled to begin next weekend in Red Deer. The Wheat Kings will open up the ten day event with a game against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Saturday, May 21st.

This will mark the Wheat Kings fifth appearance at the Cup – since joining the WCHL in 1967 – and sixth overall.
