Borussia Dortmund and Lars Ricken continue successful working relationship
Borussia Dortmund continue to prioritise continuity in their successful work at youth level and have extended Academy Director Lars Ricken’s contract until 2021.
“It is a logical decision. Our youth teams have undergone a fantastic development and all but one of our teams from under-14 to under-19 are top of their league”, underlines CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. It is only the under-16 team that are currently lying in third place in their league. However, they are also only one of two teams that have completed the campaign with the “younger birthdays” side. “Our under-17 team have won the German championship for the last two years running, our under-19 team reached the final yesterday. And credit for that must go to Lars Ricken”, said Watzke.
The 39-year old has been Academy Director at Borussia Dortmund since 2008. Prior to and during that time, Ricken played for BVB from 1990 until February 2009 and went down as the most successful player ever to have worn the black and yellow shirt. He was German champion in 1995, 1996 and 2002 and won the Champions League and World Club Cup in 1997. In 2002, he also finished as runner-up at the FIFA World Cup with the German national side.
“Lars Ricken is now in his 26th year at Borussia Dortmund. Such loyalty is a real rarity”, explained Watzke. “Lars won the German championship with the under-19s, with the first team and now as Academy Director as well”, said sporting director Michael Zorc of the exceptional achievements made by his former teammate. “We are delighted that we can continue our successful partnership in the long term.”
