VICTORIA – Tyler Smith and Brendon Restall led the way for the University of Victoria Vikes track team at the Portland Twilight in Portland, Ore., over the weekend, taking home podium finishes in the men’s 800-metre event.
Smith finished second in the event with a time of 1:49.15 while Restall finished directly behind him in third (1:49.20). Thomas Oxland and Rachel Francois also ran the 800-metre. Oxland finished 20th with a time of 1:52.86 while Francois finished sixth in the women’s event with a time of 2:03.50.
In total, the Vikes sent 10 athletes to the event, including nine members of the men’s team. Four of those nine— Cole Peterson, Peter Oxland, Isaac Penner and Timothy Longley—ran the 1500-metre, finishing 11th (3:50.35), 24th (3:55.12), 25th (3:55.53) and 31st (3:57.04), respectively.
Shoayb Bascal and Ben Weir both ran the 5000-metre. Bascal finished 13th with a time of 14:34.32 while Weir finished 11th with a time of 14:33.88.
The next event on the schedule is the Oxidental HP in Los Angeles, as Francois and Thomas Riva continue to chase Olympic standards with Rio on the horizon.
