MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota director of women’s track & field and cross country Matt Bingle has been named the 2016 Big Ten Conference Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, the league announced today.

Bingle coached the Gophers to Minnesota’s second-ever Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field title and the first in 10 years this season. Prior to this year’s title, the Gophers won the 2006 outdoor crown before winning three-straight indoor conference championships in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

The 2015-16 season marks Bingle’s fifth season as director of women’s track & field and cross country at the University of Minnesota. A three-time Big Ten Indoor Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008, and 2009, Bingle has been with the Gophers since October 2002 and became the first person to hold the title of director of women’s track & field and cross country at the ‘U’ in October 2011.

This season, Bingle’s Gophers secured the program’s fifth B1G track & field championship led by event titles from Jess Lehman (heptathlon) and Nicolle Murphy (javelin) and points from 16 different Gophers. Minnesota scored 106 points to tie for the 2016 B1G crown with Michigan at Nebraska’s Ed Weir Stadium.

Lehman and Murphy earned All-Big Ten First Team honors as event champions, and Madeline Strandemo (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Liz Berkholtz (10,000-meter run) were named All-Big Ten Second Team honorees as event runners-up as well. Kate Shelerud, a senior nursing major, received Minnesota’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
