Fort McMurray Participants Race for Free

Today the Banff Marathon introduced a program to help recognize the hardships of the residents of Fort McMurray with the recent devastating fires.  The Banff Marathon announced it is offering free race entry for any resident of Fort McMurray that would like to participate in the Marathon, Half Marathon or 10km distance.  This applies retroactively to the participants from Fort McMurray that have already registered and any new participants that would like to take part.
The Fort McMurray fires hit close to home for Event Director Paul Regensburg who grew up in Fort McMurray and returned from University to serve as one of the City’s Recreation Directors.  Regensburg commented,
“This is the very least we can do.  I know at a time when a running race may be the furthest thing from some people’s minds, some will use it as opportunity to keep fitness goals in their life despite the chaos”
The Banff Marathon has had a strong connection to Fort McMurray since the inception of the event in 2013 with a strong Fort McMurray contingent making the trek to the event each year.  The Banff Marathon also announced today that any Fort McMurray resident that is registered for the event can receive a refund or defer their entry to 2017 at no cost.
