THE DRAW IS SET FOR BOUCHARD, POSPISIL, RAONIC AND WOZNIAK AT ROLAND-GARROS

Montreal, May 20, 2016 – Earlier this morning, the draws were made for the second Grand Slam event of the season at Roland-Garros. The four Canadians who earned direct entry into the main draws in Paris, Eugenie Bouchard (Montreal, QC), Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver, BC), Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON), and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) now know their first round opponents.

Raonic, seeded eighth in the men’s draw following the withdrawal of Roger Federer, will face Serb Janko Tipsarevic in the opening round. The former world no. 8 is making a comeback following a recurring left foot injury that required two surgeries. Tipsarevic has played two Challenger tournaments in 2016. Raonic is undefeated in his four previous matches against Tipsarevic. Their last meeting came in 2013 when Canada played Serbia in the Davis Cup semifinals. Raonic’s French Open preparation includes two Masters 1000 quarter-finals in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. Last year, a foot injury forced the Canadian to miss Roland-Garros. He was a quarter-finalist in 2014.

Pospisil faces a tough task in his first match against world no. 8 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic. Pospisil has won his two previous matches against Berdych in Montreal in 2013 and Washington in 2014. Ranked no. 47 in the world, Pospisil will be looking to halt a three match losing streak. He will also be trying to win his first main draw match in Paris.

She may not be facing a seed in the opening round, but Bouchard faces a stiff challenge in the first round against world no. 39 Laura Siegemund of Germany. Siegemund has enjoyed her best results since the start of the clay court season. She reached the final in Stuttgart thanks to three Top 10 wins over Simona Halep, Roberta Vinci, and Agnieszka Radwanska. However, Bouchard also had an impressive victory over Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber in Rome. The 22-year-old was a French Open semifinalist in 2014 and fell in the first round in 2015 to France’s Kristina Mladenovic.

For her part, Wozniak, who is into the main draw thanks to her protected ranking of no. 108, will be playing her first Major main draw since the 2014 U.S. Open. She will open against world no. 56 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan. Wozniak posted the best Grand Slam result of her career at Roland-Garros, reaching the fourth round in 2009. She also advanced to the third round on three occasions, in 2008, 2010, and 2012.

Main draw action gets underway on Sunday.
