Canada 1-1 heading into quarterfinals at Pan Am Cup
MEXICO CITY, Mexico, May 23, 2016. – Canada’s team at XI Men’s Pan American Cup in Mexico City has a record of one win and one loss heading into today’s quarterfinal match against the U.S.
Canada performed strong against Costa Rica with a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-13, 25-11) on the tournament’s opening day at the Olympic Gymnasium Juan de la Barrera. Then on Monday night, Cuba downed Canada in five thrilling sets 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 15-13. Cuba won the pool.
“This is our second match of the summer, so the result is good; we haven’t been playing together and being at this level is very positive,” said Canada’s head coach Georges Laplante. “We had a strike of bad serving; it’s something we need to fix to be more efficient and consistent.”
From the three pools, the two highest ranked pool winners (Cuba and Argentina) advanced directly to the semifinals and the pool winner with the lowest ranking along with the second-placed teams compete in the quarterfinals.
Streaming will only be available for the final two matches of the day, which includes Canada versus the USA today at 18 local time, or 19h Eastern time.
