Rowing Canada Aviron names 29 athletes to compete from May 27 29

LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND Thursday, May 26, 2016 – Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) announced the nine crews who will compete at World Rowing Cup II in Lucerne, Switzerland from May 27 – 29. The regatta is taking place following the FISA Final Olympic Qualification Regatta where the men’s quadruple sculls qualified the seventh and final boat for Canada.

“The men’s quad qualifying on Tuesday was a very good way to start the week. It was a point of pride for the crew and also for the organization, knowing how much work went into that moment,” said Peter Cookson, High Performance Director, RCA. “With World Cup II as our final tune-up regatta before the Olympics, it’s important for us to continue building on our results as we approach Rio. The commitment to performance is a strong trademark of this strong group of athletes.”

World Cup II will be the final international competition for Canadian rowers prior to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The A-finals of the World Rowing Cup will be streamed live on the World Rowing website. The A-finals will also be broadcast on Rogers Sportsnet One on Sunday, May 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (ET).

Canada qualified six boats for the Olympic Games and one for the Paralympic Games at the World Rowing Championships in September 2015. The men’s quadruple sculls qualified as Canada’s seventh and final boat today for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the FISA Final Olympic Qualification Regatta.

RCA, alongside the Canadian Olympic Committee, will announce the team of athletes competing at the Rio 2016 Olympics on Tuesday, June 28 in Toronto. RCA will also host media availabilities at training camps in Guelph and London, Ontario on July 23. Details for all media events will be released closer to the date.
