VICTORIA – Canada’s top collegiate golfers are set to descend upon Morningstar Golf Club in Parksville, B.C., for the Canadian University/College Golf Championship from May 31 to June 3 and the host Vikes have a chance to make a mark on home soil.

Twenty men’s teams and 12 women’s teams will make the trip to Parksville for the 14th iteration of the Golf Canada-conducted event, created to provide Canada’s best university and college golfers with the opportunity to compete in a national event. The Vikes will play host at Morningstar—a Les Furber design founded in 1991 that has been home to a number of Golf Canada events.

“We are delighted to host this national championship and to welcome the teams and Golf Canada to the city of Parksville,” said Mike Loftus, Host Club Tournament Chair and Vice-President of Sales at the club. “The course is in excellent condition and this competition will add another exciting chapter to the history of our club. We look forward to the challenge it will provide these young men and women.”

“The Canadian University/College Championship is an excellent stage to showcase the talents of the country’s best collegiate golfers,” said Tournament Director Mary Beth McKenna. “It is an honour for these players to represent their schools. This championship is a culmination of their year-long efforts both in the classroom and on the course. I know they will each make their schools proud.”

The Vikes men enter fresh off of the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships in Silvis, Ill., where the team placed ninth out of 30 teams and second year Lawren Rowe finished third out of 156 golfers. Rowe’s performance earned him a spot on the All-Tournament team and he was also announced as a NAIA First Team All-American for his efforts this season.

Four of the five Vikes who travelled to Illinois will be in Parksville, with the only addition being Bruce Tomie. Rowe and fellow second years Andrew Funk and Mike Griffin are joined by veteran Alex Cartwright, who will be looking to make a mark in his final event with the Vikes.

Rowe, Funk, Griffin and Cartwright were all named to the PING All-Region West team last week in recognition of their strong performances this season. The Vikes have combined for three tournament wins in 2015-16 and have a chance to put the cherry on top this week.

The Vikes women did not make the cut for the NAIA Women’s Golf Championships but they have been hard at work in preparation for nationals. The team travelled to Alberta for training last week and practiced at least seven hours a day at a variety of courses, playing 18 holes in the morning and practicing their short game after lunch until dusk.

The women’s squad has put up top five finishes at a few events this season, including the Vikes Shootout in October and the A.I.I. Conference Championships, where they finished second. First-year Vike Quinn Fitzgerald impressed at the Shootout, tying UBC’s Kat Kennedy for the individual title. She will join Cadence Hellmann, Laura Ferreira and Michaela Abey in action this week.
