Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and Ilkay Gündogan will go their separate ways in future. The midfielder, who is currently suffering from a knee injury, will leave the eight-time German champions in the summer to join Manchester City, who finished fourth in the English Premier League last season, on 1 July 2016.

The two clubs reached an agreement  and the details of the transfer will remain undisclosed.

„We would like to thank Ilkay Gündogan for five extraordinary years in Dortmund. BVB wishes him a speedy recovery and all the best for his future in Manchester”, said Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc.

Gündogan reiterated how important it was for him to “thank his teammates, club officials, the coaching team and all the staff at Borussia Dortmund for a wonderful, exciting and successful time, which I will never forget. After lengthy contemplation, I decided to leave this fantastic club to take up a new sporting challenge in a different country. I will always feel a close bond to BVB and my many friends in Dortmund.”
