Vikes golfer Lawren Rowe announced as 2016 Thrifty Foods Golf Award recipient

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes and Thrifty Foods are pleased to recognize second-year Vikes golfer Lawren Rowe as the 2016 recipient of the Thrifty Foods Golf Award.

Rowe was presented with the $2500 award on May 29 by Ralf Mundel, Senior Director of Thrifty Foods, at the Thrifty Foods Youth Golf Clinic. The annual award is given to a Vikes golfer who has demonstrated outstanding playing ability, strong leadership skills and is in good academic standing.

“Thrifty Foods is proud to support initiatives that encourage sports leadership, athletic youth development and healthy, active lifestyles,” said Mundel. “This award allows student athletes to focus on being the best that they can be in their sport and in the classroom.”

In just two years of university competition, Rowe has managed to make great strides with the Vikes. He helped the team to a top-10 finish at the NAIA championship in late May, carding a team-best three-over-par to finish third place overall, and is currently near the front of the pack at the Canadian University/College Golf Championship, hosted in Parksville, B.C., from May 31 to June 3.

“Lawren is a great representative of this Thrifty Foods award,” said head coach Justin Clews. “Born and raised in Victoria, Lawren is a proven leader of our Vikes men’s golf team and puts endless amount of time into his game. He also played many junior Vikes tour events as a youngster which he looks back on as a great developmental tool in his success at golf.”

The Victoria product was instrumental in all three of UVic’s tournament wins this season, helping lead the Vikes to victory at the Vikes Shootout in October, the Master’s College Invitational in February and the Corban Spring Invitational in March. His stroke average of 71.63 in 2015-16 was good enough for second best in the NAIA. For his efforts, Rowe was named a NAIA First Team All-American, marking the second straight year that he’s been named to an All-America team.

Thrifty Foods has been a major contributor to the University of Victoria on many unique initiatives, partnering with the Vikes to host the Thrifty Foods Youth Golf Clinics as part of the PGA Tour and supporting the varsity team with their annual athletic award. The annual youth golf clinics give kids the opportunity to work with the Vikes like Rowe to develop their skills and help inspire them to see the future possibilities that there are with continuing in sport.

This year’s clinic was held on May 29 and featured an excellent turnout. Vikes golfers help coach at the youth clinics and in return money raised goes to help fund the annual Thrifty Foods Golf Award as well as the Vikes Junior Golf Program.
