Eves of Destruction Roller Derby League
Victoria B.C.: Eves of Destruction’s Hard Cores bounced back from a recent loss at home with a big 215-136 road win over the Brass Knuckle Derby Dames (BKDD). The bout in Fuller Lake was the Hard Cores first away game of the season and their secret weapon was a good attitude.
“I was so impressed with our team’s ability to support each other,” said Kreeper Sutherland, who skated in her first bout as a team captain. “We worked together to play some really excellent derby.” The bout got chippy in the second half as the lead widened, but the Hard Cores kept their cool and focused on the game.
The Hard Cores team is made up of the newer skaters in the Eves of Destruction. Many on the weekend’s roster stepped up to new positions on the track, including ReGretel and Shove Bug who racked up points as jammers. Sutherland also had great success as a jammer; “I channelled my favourite skaters and tried to envision how they would conquer the track,” she said.
Three skaters—Coastal Chaos, Iva Meanstreak, and Vindikate—from Salt Spring Island’s The Committed joined the Hard Cores for this bout. They adapted to the team with what Sutherland called “an unrelenting positivity.” The team is now 2-1 on the season, with an earlier win over BKDD and a loss to The Committed.
The Hard Cores will take the track next in Powell River on July 2.
Roller derby returns to the Victoria area June 25th with two bouts, first The Rotten Apples against the Stone Cold Stellas of Comox Valley, followed by the Margarita Villains against the Rainier Roller Girls from Washington State.
