After a year of rest, the beach volleyball season kicks off with a major tournament. In the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, the most exciting story is still yet to told: who will book their flight to this summer’s Olympic Games in Brazil?
In the Rothenbaum Stadium from 7-12 June, the smart Major Hamburg joins the Swatch Beach Volleyball Major Series 2016 for a final showdown. The best teams in the world compete for the last tickets to Rio and the German teams are fighting for the final Olympic place.
Germany’s gold medal winner from London, Julius Brink, won’t be missing this exhilarating tournament in Hamburg. He said: “This is the most exciting Olympic qualification that I have ever experienced, with the men and particularly the women. For women, we can send to Rio four teams instead of two. No other nation in the world can accomplish this besides Germany.”
Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst have already got their bags packed for the Copacabana. The question is who will join them? The battle for the second place is the most dramatic side-story to this week’s tournament. Will it be Karla Borger/Britta Büthe or Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler? The competition has never been tougher – it’s such a shame that one team will miss out.
It all adds extra spice to a fantastic tournament, and Julius Brink agrees: “One can only congratulate the organizers that will take the help from the Swatch Beach Volleyball Majors Series and try to establish it in this area, where Germany has earned a sport event in such magnitude. They give players the conditions that they have earned. From building and setting forth the best there is in the international circuit.”
So what will be the ending to this story Hamburg? What we do know is that it cannot be missed. On Saturday the business end of the competition gets under way with the men’s quarterfinals at 10am before the women’s semifinals at 12pm and the final at 4pm. The men’s final takes place at 4pm on Sunday!
