Penn was represented by eight wrestlers at University Nationals

PHILADELPHIA – Folkstyle has been put on the back burner for the past few weeks as University of Pennsylvania wrestlers turned to freestyle, bringing home three All-American honors from this past weekend’s University Nationals in Akron, Ohio.

May Bethea, a 2016 NCAA qualifier at 157 pounds, finished sixth at 70kg.
Canaan Bethea, a 2015 Penn graduate and a two-time NCAA qualifier, was sixth at 86kg.
Frank Mattiace, twice an EIWA placewinner, was eighth at 97kg.

Penn was represented by eight wrestlers at University Nationals – each representing the Pennsylvania RTC which operates out of Penn’s Pottruck Wrestling Center. All eight grapplers won at least one match at the tournament.

May Bethea was seeded No. 4 in the tournament and posted a 5-3 record en route to a sixth place finish. He would reach the semifinals with a 7-7 decision over Markus Scheidel, who wrestles collegiately for Columbia. In the semifinals, Bethea was defeated by the No. 1 seed – and eventual champion – Adam Hall who was a two-time All-American at Boise State and is currently an assistant coach at N.C. State.

May’s big brother Canaan was dominant early on at 86kg with three technical falls in his first three matches, outscoring his opponents 31-0. In the quarterfinals, he was defeated by eventual champion Morgan McIntosh of the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club – the 2016 NCAA runner-up at 197 pounds. Bethea, who competes full-time for the PRTC in freestyle, would finish his tournament with a 5-3 record and a sixth place finish.

Frank Mattiace posted a 4-3 record at 97kg for an eighth place finish. After a 12-1 technical fall to open his tournament, Mattaice was edged by the eventual runner-up, Nikko Reyes of Northern Colorado in the second round. Mattaice would go on to win three matches on the back side before coming up short in a 4-4 match with Jared Haught.

May Bethea went 4-0 in his matches, while Frank Mattiace was 3-0 and Brooks Martino and Canaan Bethea each posted a 2-0 day.
