Canada’s Team to Feature Large Contingent of Players With Strong BC Connections
The uprights are in, the field is lined, and in less than 24 hours the doors at BC Place in Vancouver will swing open to welcome thousands of rugby fans for the first-ever Fifteens Rugby Test Match held at the world-class stadium.
Canada’s Senior Men’s XV Team faces world #10 ranked Japan in a rematch of their exciting 2014 encounter. Kickoff on Saturday is at 3:00pm.
Four-time Rugby World Cup veteran Jamie Cudmore from Squamish, BC, has been selected Captain for Saturday’s game against Japan. Earlier this week, he spoke with the media about how the team is preparing and what to expect on game day.
Cudmore has earned a reputation as a vocal leader on the field and commands the respect and trust of his peers. Those peers include a pair of Canadian Direct Insurance BC Bears who have come up through the ranks to the National Team: Vancouver’s Brock Staller from the UBC Thunderbirds and Williams Lake Rustlers / Castaway Wanderers star Jake Ilnicki.
The Canada side will also feature several names familiar to BC Rugby fans, as these players have honed their skills in recent seasons through the BC Rugby Club competitions:
Djustice Sears-Duru (Castaway Wanderers)
Ray Barkwill (Castaway Wanderers)
Evan Olmstead (Capilano RFC)
Aaron Carpenter (Cowichan RFC)
Matt Evans (Cowichan RFC)
Gordie McRorie (UBCOB Ravens)
