NEW WESTMINSTER – Canada West soccer is set to hit the turf early in 2016, as the Canada West men’s and women’s soccer schedules were released Wednesday.
For the first time in conference history the soccer season kicks off in August, as the men’s regular season officially opens Wednesday, August 24 when Mount Royal visits MacEwan and Calgary travels to take on Alberta.
The Vikes men open the season on the road against UBC Okanagan on August 27 and don’t hit the field at home until September 9 against Fraser Valley. They’ll have a chance to avenge their loss to UBC in the Canada West final in early October, as the two teams meet for a home-and-away series the weekend of October 6-8.
The nine-week men’s regular season schedule concludes Sunday, October 23, before conference quarter-final action on Saturday, October 29 and the men’s Final Four November 5-6.
A total of eight men’s playoff berths are up for grabs in 2016, with four Pacific and four Prairie Division teams qualifying for Canada West post-season play.
On the women’s side, the season gets underway Friday, September 2 when the Trinity Western Spartans travel to Abbotsford to take on the Fraser Valley Cascades.
The Vikes women will open the season against defending CIS champions UBC at home, as they start the season with three games at home before hitting the road for four straight in mid-September. Trinity Western, who beat the Vikes in the 2016 Keg Spring Cup final, will hit Victoria on October 15 for the second of two matches on the season.
The women’s eight-week regular season wraps up Sunday, October 23, with 12 teams (six from each the Prairie and Pacific) competing in regional playoff action on Saturday, October 29.
As was the case last season, the Canada West women’s season concludes with a six-team championship tournament – the Select Six – which will be hosted by the highest remaining Pacific Division team November 3-6.
The 2016 CIS national tournaments are slated for November 10-13, with the men headed to the University of Guelph, while the women travel to Acadia University.
