Portland Winterhawks Vice President, General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston has announced the hiring of Oliver David as Assistant Coach, who will join Johnston and Associate Coach Kyle Gustafson behind the bench.

David comes to the Winterhawks after three seasons with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League, where he was Associate Head Coach & Assistant General Manager. In David’s three seasons in Dubuque they went 108-61-2-9, with a trip to last season’s championship series and back-to-back appearances in the conference final in 2014 and 2015.

“We are fortunate to be able to hire a coach of Oliver’s caliber. His experience with coaching junior hockey players as well as his background with USA Hockey will be a great addition to our organization,” said Johnston.

“I’m excited to get to work. To have the opportunity to be a Winterhawk is surreal at the moment,” said David. “Because of people like Mike, Matt Bardsley and Kyle Gustafson, the Portland Winterhawks are exactly where I want to be. I look forward to growing with these guys, and ultimately contributing to the success of our organization.”

David joined the Fighting Saints in 2013 after four seasons as head coach of the Kenai River Brown Bears of the North American Hockey League. During his tenure the club went 87-74-17 and advanced approximately 10 players per year to the NCAA, one of the league’s top marks.

From 2005-2009, David, a California native, coached many of that state’s top programs at every level, winning a USA Hockey National Championship with the California Wave in 2006, and winning District and State titles every year from 2005-2009. He spent time with the California Wave (2005-2007), the Anaheim Jr. Ducks (2006-2007) and the LA Selects (2007-2009).

David and his wife, Denee, have a son, Oden.
