Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, June 18, 2016 : Canada defeated Egypt 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16) in its second FIVB World League match of the year.
It was a back and forth battle in the first set, with Egypt looking determined to find a way to stop Canada. However, Canada found its rhythm in the second and third set to achieve its second straight-set win of the tournament in as many matches.
“It was a great grinding win as we did a lot of losing along the way, but still believed in each other and came through,” said Canada’s acting head coach, Larry McKay. “(Team captain) Fred Winters was very important for us in winning the first set. The toughest challenge is ahead of us tomorrow when we face a strong Czech team with several thousand fans behind them.”
Steve Marshall and Toon Van Lankvelt were top scorers for Canada with 12 each. Ahmed Elkotb contributed 14 points for Egypt.
FIVB World League Group 2 action continues tomorrow: Canada’s match against the Czech Republic is live online (www.cbcsports.ca) at noon eastern time.
Next weekend the Canadian team comes home to play World League matches in Saskatoon at the SaskTel Centre, June 24 to 26.
