Vancouver, BC – The Vancouver Canucks are proud to announce that they will celebrate the storied career of defenceman Mattias Ohlund by inducting him into the Canucks Ring of Honour on Friday, December 16th prior to their game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Rogers Arena.
“Mattias led by example and brought a calming and steady presence to the Canucks organization for more than a decade,” said Trevor Linden, Canucks President of Hockey Operations. “When you went into battle with him on any given night, you knew that he would give you his all and do whatever it takes to help the team win. The lasting imprint he has made not just on Canucks record books but on the current core including the likes of Edler and the Sedins is evident today. This is a very deserving honour for Mattias and his family.”
Ohlund, the Canucks anchor on the blueline for 11 seasons including the West Coast Express era, helped lead the club to four playoff appearances as well as its then best regular season record in franchise history in 2006.07 (105 points). A four-time winner of the Babe Pratt Trophy awarded to the best defenceman on the team (1998, 2000, 2004, and 2006), Ohlund finished his career as the Canucks all-time leader in blueline goals (93), points (325) and shots (1,534).
Among Canucks defencemen, he also ranks fourth all-time in assists (232) and power play goals (36), third in shorthanded goals (5) and second in game-winning goals (19) and overtime goals (6). Originally drafted by Vancouver with the 13th overall selection in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Ohlund played a total of 13 NHL seasons split between the Canucks (1997-2009) and Tampa Bay Lightning (2009-2011). A former All-Star and All-Rookie Team recipient, Ohlund ranks seventh on the Canucks all-time games played list (770).
The Canucks Ring of Honour was launched in the 2010.11 season to celebrate Canucks heroes who have made a lasting impact on the franchise. Ohlund will become the sixth member of the Canucks Ring of Honour joining Orland Kurtenbach, Kirk McLean, Thomas Gradin, Harold Snepsts and Pat Quinn.
