Eves celebrate Pride week with double header at home

eves roller derby

Victoria B.C.: Esquimalt’s Archie Browning curling rink will be filled with lots of colour, sparkle, and hard-hitting derby action Saturday night (July 9th), as two Eves mash-up teams— The Glitter Bombs and the Rainbow Riders— face off in the league’s annual Pride bout.

The teams feature players from all five Eves teams – The Margarita Villains, The Belles of the Brawl, The Hard Cores, Rotten Apples, and The A-Team. Villains coach Capt. Nick has been named captain for the Rainbow Riders while Belles veteran Rage will captain The Glitter Bombs.

The Eves support the LGBTQ2 community and Pride Week. The league does not tolerate discrimination and promotes acceptance, as outlined in their league gender policy which states:

The Eves of Destruction (EoD) recognizes that gender is a construct and is not decided by the physical or chemical makeup of our bodies…We recognize that identifying as transgender, intersex, and/or gender expansive is not in any way related to an individual’s eligibility for participating in EoD roller derby as a league member or volunteer. EoD makes every attempt to provide as open and inclusive a space as possible. Transphobia is considered harassment and will not be tolerated in EoD.

There will also be plenty of entertainment off the track at the event, including a half time drag king show by King Fling Vic, and celebrity game announcers Aleasha NiColleur and Esther Bunnay. Local radio personality and transgender activist James Gardner will blow the ceremonial first whistle.

Following the opening bout, the Eve’s A-Team – comprised of the league’s top players – takes to the track in a game versus the Northwest Derby Company. This will be the second time the two teams face off this season, after the A-Team’s 244-73 victory over the Bremerton, WA based team in April.

Doors open at 5 pm, seats are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets can be purchasedonline, or atLogan’s Pub,Hive Hair andThe Esquimalt Recreation Centre.

The double header follows a successful road trip to Powell River last weekend, where the Hard Cores defeated the Pow!Town Brawl Stars 198-99. Shove Bug was named MVP for the Hard Cores for their strong jammer performance. This was the final game for the Hard Cores in 2016, and they improved to 3-1 for the season!
