Eves’ Rainbow Riders and A-Team victories highlight annual Pride bout
Victoria B.C.: The Eves of Destruction A-Team improved their season record to 2-1 after their 277-83 win over Northwest Derby Company (NDC) of Bremerton, Washington night (July 9th).
The A-Team held the lead for the entire game, thanks to strong offensive performances from jammers like Tina F. Lawless, who was named team MVP. Even more impressive than the success of the jammers were the incredibly strong walls the A-Team consistently had on the track. The NDC jammers had a lot of difficulty breaking through the A-Team walls, which allowed the A-Team jammers to produce very high scoring jams.
Head referee, Amelia Pound, says about the A-Team’s night performance:
“From an official’s perspective, the A-team played a clean, hard hitting game. There were a lot of legal, heavy hits, and effective blocking that were the keys to their success.”
This is the second time this season the A-Team has defeated Northwest Derby Company in 2016. The A-Team won 244-73 when the teams met in Bremerton in May.
Prior to the headlining bout, fans were treated to a nail-biting, seesaw battle between two Eves’ mash-up teams, Glitter Bombs and Rainbow Riders. In addition to plenty of sparkle and colour – there were hard hits and quick jamming! Glitter Bomb blockers Rage and Tanya Cheeks, who was subsequently named team MVP, delivered powerful hits that left opponents flat on the track. The Rainbow Riders, meanwhile, had offense on their side with jammers Chewrockya, Spazmanian Devil and, team MVP, Bad Boyes bumping up the score.
The game came down to the final jam, with Glitter Bombs in the lead by sixteen points over Rainbow Riders. Near the beginning of the final jam, Glitter Bomb jammer, Kreeper Sutherland, received a penalty, allowing Rainbow Rider jammer, Chewrockya to make up some of the point differential. Chewrockya scored 20 points to Kreeper Sutherland’s three points, and the game ended with a one point difference. The Rainbow Riders came out on top: 194-193!
League President Dalai Slamma says the night was about more than just roller derby:
“We love being partnered with an amazing local organization like Victoria Pride. This bout is one of our favourites every year and we always look forward to it… many thanks to the Pride members who performed, volunteered, and attended; we look forward to continuing this partnership for many years to come!”
The final game of the season takes place on September 24th, and will feature the traditional matchup between The Margarita Villains and The Belles of the Brawl. Prior to this headlining game, The Rotten Apples Junior Derby will take on The Candy Crushers from Nanaimo.
The Eves of Destruction Roller Derby League was formed in 2006, and has over 70 players, refs, and officials, and features five teams. EOD’s A-Team, The Belles of the Brawl, The Margarita Villains, The Hard Cores and the gender-inclusive Juniors, The Rotten Apples, made up of players aged 10-18.
