Prince Albert, SK – The Prince Albert Raiders are proud to announce graduating defenceman Jesse Lees has committed to the Mount Royal University Cougars for the upcoming CIS season.
Lees capped off his five-year WHL career with 23 goals and 35 assists in 71 games during the 2015-16 season with the Raiders, good for eighth in league scoring amongst defenceman.
One of the reasons Lees decided to suit up for the Cougars was being close to home. Mount Royal University is located in Lees’ hometown of Calgary, AB.
“I’ve been away for five years now, so it’ll be nice to get home and play near my family and friends again.”
Lees was drafted by the Kelowna Rockets ninth overall in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. After dressing in 184 games for the Rockets, he was acquired by the Raiders on Dec. 10, 2014. In his 294-game WHL career, Lees totalled 55 goals, 107 assists and 265 penalty minutes.
Last season, the Cougars finished third in the Canada West standings with a 17-8-3 record. Mount Royal was eliminated from contention in the Canada West semifinal by the University of Alberta Golden Bruins.
“They’re going to have a good team again this year,” Lees said of the Cougars. “On top of that, it’s a smaller school, so the classes aren’t as big.”
Lees is enrolled in open studies for his first year at the school. He hopes to transition into either business or athletic therapy.
