CARSON, CA – Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-18 Residency are headed to the program’s second ever United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) championship match after a 4-0 victory over Players Development Academy (PDA) in the semifinals on Thursday.
“We just asked the boys to stick to the plan and not lose focus and concentration, and I have to say they did exactly what was asked,” said U-18 Residency coach Rich Fagan after the match.
The ‘Caps had goals from Andre Baires (Winnipeg, MB), David Norman (Coquitlam, BC), and Daniel Sagno (Winnipeg, MB), mixed in with an own goal from PDA.
Whitecaps FC head into the final on a 34-match unbeaten streak, having lost only once all season. They will play FC Dallas, who defeated Nomads SC in the other semifinal. This will be a rematch of the 2012 USSDA championship match when the ‘Caps U-18s made the final in their inaugural USSDA season, falling 3-2 in a closely contested match to FC Dallas.
It was a comfortable victory for the ‘Caps, but far from easy. PDA provided a stiff test from the opening minutes that required the Canadian side to be at their best.
After weathering a couple early chances from PDA generated by United States U-20 national team striker Isaiah young, the ‘Caps finally opened the scoring on 32 minutes. Richmond, BC’s Patrick Metcalfe swung in a great cross that was deflected in by Baires.
PDA had a couple more chances before halftime, but Orleans, Ontario’ goalkeeper Aidan Aylward was well positioned to stop each shot.
The ‘Caps were determined to make the final and came out flying to start the second half.
On 50 minutes, substitute Marcello Polisi from Coquitlam crossed in a great ball that was headed by Burnaby’s Terran Campbell off the far post, then miskicked in for an own goal to make it 2-0.
Onlyit was 3-0. This time it was Norman curling a dangerous ball into the box that beat the goalkeeper to increase the lead to 3-0.
Finally, on 68 minutes, some fine play from the ‘Caps brought a fourth goal. After Campbell received a ball in the box, he sent across a perfect pass with the outside of his foot that was tapped home by Sagno for a 4-0 score.
With four minutes to go, Young would pull one back for PDA, but it was not enough as Vancouver sealed the victory to advance to the final.
