2016 Extreme Sailing Series

Fickle winds limited the sailing to one race in the last day of the Extreme Sailing Series in Hamburg on 31 July, a contest made especially critical because it served up double points. Sail Portugal-Visit Madeira made history with their first race win, while the regatta went to Oman Air by the slimmest of margins, with Alinghi in second and Red Bull Sailing in third.

HAMBURG (Germany) – As winds failed to materialize, the fourth act of the 2016 Extreme Sailing Series ended with one single race on Sunday – a make-or-break, double points Final. While Series leader Oman Air had clutched the top of the points through the previous three days of sailing, Alinghi’s dominant performance on Saturday set up expectations for a dramatic finale. Those expectations were more than realized when Oman Air faltered in the showdown and Alinghi needed only to put three boats between them to clinch the regatta win. The two-time America’s Cup winners from Switzerland applied the pressure, but couldn’t pass the Red Bull Sailing GC32 skippered by Austrian Double Olympic Gold Medalist Roman Hagara that was flying ahead of them. Final result for Hamburg: Oman Air first with 188 points, Alinghi second with 187 and the Red Bull Sailing Team third at 166.

Sunday’s action thrilled the large crowds along the River Elbe, and none moreso than fans of Portugul, as Sail Portugal-Visit Madeira captured their first Extreme Sailing Series race win.

Hamburg marked the third consecutive regatta victory for helmsman Morgan Larson, but the overall standings remain close, with Oman Air’s 47 points putting them just five points ahead of second-place Red Bull Sailing, and six points to the better of Alinghi in the number three spot. Four critical regattas remain before the season champions are crowned.

Next up, the second half of the Extreme Sailing Series season begins in the stunning setting of St. Petersburg, Russia on 1–4 September, 2016.
