Day One : Beach Kicks Off Olympics for Volleyball Canada

Volleyball Canada at Rio 2016 - Day One

Aug. 06, 2016 :Canada’s Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter kicked off Volleyball Canada’s Rio 2016 Games today at the Copacabana Beach Volleyball venue. Brazil’s top-ranked Alison/ Bruno Schmidt defeated Binstock/Schachter 2-0 (21-19, 22-20) in a close and exciting match in front of an exuberant home crowd.

“We’re maybe not the biggest, most powerful team, but we’re an intelligent team, so we’re able to adapt to different styles (of play),” said Binstock, now a two-time Olympian. “We have potential and we have to keep adjusting. And if we can go long enough we have more instances where we can challenge other teams.”

The Richmond Hill, Ontario, duo’s next match is against Italy at 21:00 local on Monday.

Tomorrow will be a busy day for Canada’s volleyball Olympians:

  • 15:30 local  – Beach CAN (Pavan & Bansley) vs. NED
  • 17:05 local – Indoor men CAN vs. USA
  • 22:00 local – Beach ITA vs CAN (Broder & Valjas)
  • Midnight local – LAT vs CAN (Saxton & Schalk)
