SISTER’S OLYMPIC MEDAL INSPIRES ARIANE MAINVILLE AT CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

EDMONTON – Despite two gold medals, Ariane Mainville of Boucherville, Que., didn’t achieve all her goals this week at the Canadian Swimming Championships but she won’t have to look far for inspiration for the future.

Ariane, 22, is the younger sister of Sandrine Mainville (24) who led off Canada’s bronze medal winning women’s 4X100-m freestyle relay on Saturday night at the Olympic Games in Rio.

‘’Sandrine almost stopped swimming four years ago because she missed the (2012) Olympic team so I know she deserves her success,’’ said Ariane after her victory in the 100-m freestyle on Sunday in 56.05. ‘’I couldn’t be happier for her. I can’t wait to see her. I know how hard she’s been working.’’

‘’I’m the proudest sister ever.’’

Ariane Mainville was hoping to post a better time in her 100 free final on Sunday.

‘’I didn’t have a good preliminary this morning,’’ said Mainville. ‘’So I knew I could do better tonight and I wanted to get a best time going into next season. My goal was to get in to the 55 seconds but I just missed despite a much better swim in the final.’’

‘’When I saw my sister last night it really inspired me. I couldn’t stop crying after I saw her win. I know what I have to do to get better.’’

Other winners in women’s competition Sunday were Olivia Anderson of Etobicoke, Ont., in the 1500-m freestyle, Maggie MacNeil of London, Ont., in the 200-m butterfly, Ashley McGregor of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 100-m breaststroke and the Pointe-Claire Swim Club in the 4X100-m medley relay. It was also a second gold for Anderson, MacNeil and McGregor.

On the men’s side, Stefan Milosevic of Vancouver took the 100 free, Nicolaas Dekker of Richmond, B.C., the 200 fly, Richard Funk of Edmonton the 100-m breaststroke and Peter Brothers of Victoria the 800 free. It was a second victory for Dekker, Funk and Brothers.

Edmonton Keyano took the men’s 4X100-m medley relay.
