SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced that the club has added right-handed pitcher Arquimedes Caminero to the 25-man roster. To make room on the Mariners Major League 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker has been optioned to AAA Tacoma.
Caminero (#48) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game vs. the Detroit Tigers.
Caminero, 29, was acquired by Seattle from Pittsburgh in exchange for a Player to Be Named Later and a conditional Player to Be Named Later on Saturday (Aug. 6). Caminero was 1-2 with 1 save and a 3.51 ERA (16 ER, 41.0 IP with 32 strikeouts in 39 relief appearances with Pittsburgh. In his last 21 appearances, he has a 2.13 ERA (6 ER, 25.1 IP) with 19 strikeouts since May 24. He made three rehab appearances with Indianapolis after being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad (May 25-June 11).
In parts of four Major League seasons, he is 6-4 with 1 save and a 3.86 ERA (58 ER, 135.1 IP) with 125 strikeouts in 131 games, all relief appearances, with Miami (2013-14) and Pittsburgh (2015-16). He was signed by the Florida Marlins as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2005.
Walker, 23, was activated from the 15-day disabled list (tendinitis in his right foot) on Saturday (Aug. 6) and started that night vs. Los Angeles-AL. He allowed 6 runs on 7 hits over 4.0 innings against the Angels. Walker is 4-7 with a 4.10 ERA (41 ER, 90.0 IP) with 80 strikeouts and 20 walks in 16 starts with Seattle this season. Walker posted a 1.44 ERA (4 ER, 25.0 IP) in the month of April, the 3rd-best April ERA in Mariners history (min: 4 GS), but he is just 2-7 with a 5.12 ERA (37 ER, 65.0 IP) and has allowed 18 home runs in 13 starts since May 1. In parts of four Major League seasons with the Mariners, Walker is 18-18 with a 4.14 ERA (144 ER, 312.2 IP) in 57 career appearances (54 starts).
