Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil are into the quarter-finals of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games following a 6-1, 6-4 victory in less than an hour over Portugal’s Gastao Elias and Joao Sousa on Monday evening.
After saving match points in their opening match, their second-round contest was much more straightforward. Nestor and Pospisil, seeded No. 7 in Rio, didn’t face a single break point as they cruised to the win.
“We’re playing really well, we served great,” Pospisil said. “I would say we didn’t have a weakness today, we covered all the areas well. For sure we raised the intensity from yesterday. Last night’s match was really patchy, but today was just solid.”
The Canadian duo advance to play Italians Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi in the quarter-finals, where they will hope to keep that strong play going. They will take to the court on Tuesday evening at the Olympic Tennis Centre. Also in action earlier in the day will be Eugenie Bouchard and Gabriela Dabrowski in their second-round women’s doubles match, as they’ll look to join their compatriots in the quarters.
