MEXICO CITY, Mexico – Tournament officials announced today that the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship will be held at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City, Mexico, March 2-5, 2017. The tournament attracts a world-class field that features the top 50 golfers in the world in one of the season’s most elite events.
Club de Golf Chapultepec opened in 1928 and served as the original and primary site for the Mexican Open from 1944-1960, before the tournament began rotating sites. The very first event, held in December 1944, took place with a first prize of $2,500 out of a $10,000 purse. Al Espinosa, head golf professional at Mexico City Country Club at the time, won the event. As the inaugural professional golf tournament at Club de Golf Chapultepec, it brought the modern tournament to life at the facility.
“We’re excited to be able to bring such a global tournament to Club de Golf Chapultepec,” said Club de Golf Chapultepec Chairman Rodrigo Lebois “There will be plenty of tough holes that will keep the leaderboard interesting, and we’re excited to be able to offer memorable viewing experiences for the fans and our members while they’re here during tournament week. Being involved with this event is more than an honor, and we’re looking forward to supporting Grupo Salinas’ mission of growing the game of golf in Mexico.”
Featuring a 7,267-yard, par-72 course, Club de Golf Chapultepec last held the Mexican Open in 2014, which is now part of PGA TOUR Latinoamérica. Over the course of 18 past editions played there, the club members witnessed Mexican Open wins by stars such as Al Espinoza (1944, 1945, 1946 and 1947), Roberto De Vicenzo (1951, 1953 and 1955), Ben Crenshaw (1981) and Jay Haas (1991).
“It was incredible having the opportunity to play, and win, at Club de Golf Chapultepec,” said Haas. “The course has always been extremely fun to play, albeit challenging, and I know that the players are going to enjoy it there. The weather is perfect at such a high altitude, and the people of Mexico City are very welcoming. With all of those factors combined, and with it being a World Golf Championships event, the Mexico Championship will be one of the players’ favorite stops.”
The Mexico Championship is one of four World Golf Championships events on golf’s calendar. The World Golf Championships bring the best players from across the globe together to highlight the very best that the sport has to offer. Debuting in 1999 at Valderrama Golf Club in Spain, Club de Chapultepec will be the 10th venue and fifth country to hold the Mexico Championship as a result of a seven-year agreement through 2023 with Grupo Salinas, a collection of companies based in Mexico City primarily involved in retail, television telecommunications and other businesses.
“Hosting the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship is yet another proof of Mexico’s stable present and prosperous future. With a great history, Mexico is today a country with strong institutions, which has become a leading touristic, cultural and business center, not only in the region, but in the world.
There is no doubt that Mexico is an ideal place for an event such as a World Golf Championship, which will now be a part of the rest of global events already taking place in our country, such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix, NFL Monday Night Games, NBA Games, Fashion Weeks, and many others”, said Benjamin Salinas, CEO of TV Azteca. “By promoting the World Golf Championship, we are promoting a sport with a lot of local potential, in a country of great athletes. We are looking forward to sponsoring this and many other events, making golf inclusive, and offering a variety of ticket options so that anyone can enjoy the event.”
