CHICAGO, Illinois. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
- James Paxton, LHP, recalled from rehab assignment at AAA Tacoma and activated from the 15-day disabled list.
- Wade LeBlanc, LHP, designated for assignment.
Paxton (#65) is scheduled to be the starting pitcher in tonight’s (5:10 pm PT) game at the Chicago White Sox.
Seattle has 10 days to trade, release or outright the contract of LeBlanc to the minors.
Paxton, 27, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 16 (retro to Aug. 8) with a left elbow contusion. He made one rehab start with AAA Tacoma on Aug. 20 vs. Las Vegas, striking out 3 in 3.0 scoreless innings.
The left-hander was removed from his last MLB start, August 7 vs. Los Angeles – AL, after being struck near his left elbow by a line drive in the top of the 9th inning.
Paxton is 4-5 with a 3.53 ERA (32 ER, 81.2 IP) with 73 strikeouts and 18 walks in 13 starts with Seattle this season. Since being recalled from AAA Tacoma on June 1, Paxton has posted 7 quality starts with Mariners this season. Paxton has recorded 3 outings of at least 8.0 innings pitched and 2 or fewer runs allowed, including his last 2 consecutive starts. Over his last 7 starts (7/2 – c), Paxton is 3-2 with a 3.06 ERA (16 ER, 47.0 IP) with 32 strikeouts and 7 walks.
Overall with Tacoma, he was 4-3 with a 3.73 ERA (21 ER, 50.2 IP) with 53 strikeouts in 11 starts with AAA Tacoma this season.
In parts of three Major League seasons with Seattle, he is 16-13 with a 3.28 ERA (90 ER, 246.2 IP) with 209 strikeouts in 43 starts. He was drafted by Seattle in the 4th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft after he completed his career at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
LeBlanc, 32, was 3-0 with 1 save with a 4.50 ERA (25 ER, 50.0 IP) with 41 strikeouts and 9 walks in 11 games, including 8 starts, with Seattle this season. In 8 starts with Seattle, LeBlanc posted 5 quality starts. LeBlanc was acquired from Toronto on June 22 in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Prior to being acquired by Seattle, LeBlanc 7-2 with a 1.71 ERA (17 ER, 89.2 IP) in 14 starts, including 12 quality starts with Triple-A Buffalo (TOR) this season. LeBlanc is a veteran of 8 Major League seasons with San Diego (2008-11), Miami (2012-13), Houston (2013), Los Angeles-AL (2014), New York-AL (2014) and Seattle (2016).
