TORONTO (CIS) – The defending national champion UBC Thunderbirds (women) and York Lions (men) top the first national rankings of the 2016 CIS soccer season.

On the women’s side, UBC received 58 points in the inaugural coaches’ poll to open at No. 1, with Laval, Trinity Western, Ottawa and York rounding out the top five.

Last November, UBC shut out Trinity Western 3-0 to claim its sixth Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy on home field, the team’s first title since 2006.  The Thunderbirds are scheduled to open their season Saturday with a visit to Victoria.

In men’s competition, York earned its second straight No. 1 ranking to begin the season, with UNB, UBC, UQAM and McMaster occupying the first five spots.

Last fall, York claimed its third consecutive Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy in front of its home fans by blanking UNB 2-0 in the championship final. The Lions, who opened the season over the weekend with a pair of 7-0 and 4-0 shutouts on the road at Algoma, will play their home opener against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday.
