Wolfville, N.S. – Acadia University and Acadia Athletics are pleased to announce the return of the Women in Sport Brunch on Saturday, October 15th from 9:00 a.m. to Noon at the Fountain Commons on the Acadia campus.
The purpose of the event is to connect alumni, current varsity athletes, local community members and businesses to encourage networking, mentorship and leadership development for female athletes. The funds raised from this event will go toward supporting Women’s Varsity Programs at Acadia and provide scholarship opportunities for female student-athletes.
Last held in 2014 with headliners with two-time Olympic Bobsled Gold Medalist Heather Moyse, and Acadia Soccer Alumni Cindy Tye, the event was followed by a coaching workshop that provided local coaches with an NCCP module.
“After the Women in Sport Brunch in 2014, there was a buzz around Wolfville with community members demonstrating how strongly they felt about supporting female athletes in all avenues of their development. We hope for this to continue”, commented fourth year Axewomen volleyball head coach Michelle Wood, who chairs the organizing committee.
This year’s Women in Sport will headline former Rugby Axewoman Andrea Burk. A motivational speaker and trainer, Burk was featured as a colour commentator for CBC’s Olympic coverage of women’s rugby in Rio this past August.
A member of the National Senior Women’s Rugby Team since 2009, she was a 2015 Player of the Year finalist and named to the Women’s Rugby World Cup Dream Team. Burk was awarded Rugby Canada’s Gillian Florence award in 2014, which recognizes the player who best embodies the qualities of a Canadian national team player as voted on by her teammates.
Andrea’s expertise is in building team cultures that thrive in highly competitive environments. She applies her proven strategies that make her a world-class athlete to motivate and inspire others to win in their own fields.
Burk earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from Acadia University and a Masters of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University.
“We are very excited to have Andrea Burk join us to share her story on her sporting experiences from the grassroots through to International play”, commented Wood. “She has had some exceptional leadership training and has a great message to share with our community.”
Tickets are available at the Acadia Box Office beginning September 1, 2016. Last year’s event was sold out.
