Victoria drops Kamloops 5-3 in Pre-Season opener.


Kamloops, BC- The Victoria Royals scored the first three goals of the game to defeat the Kamloops Blazers 5-3 and were paced by Dante Hannoun who registered a hat-trick on Friday night at the Sandman Centre.


Both teams took the opportunity to give their younger players some game time as the Royals dressed 10 rookies, while the Blazers went with eight.


The Royals applied pressure on the Blazers early in the contest and were rewarded with three goals in the opening period, two from Dante Hannoun and one by rookie Dino Kambeitz. Victoria’s Hannoun completed the hat-trick with an empty-net marker in the final frame to round out the scoring. The Royals’ Tyler Soy scored the game-winner on the powerplay in the second stanza.


Kamloops scored all three of their goals in the middle frame with two markers by Matt Revel and a tally from Matthew Campese.


Victoria’s rookie goaltender Dean McNabb got the nod in net and turned away 32 of the 35 shots directed his way. Kamloops’ Dylan Ferguson and Max Palaga combined to stop 22 of 27 shots.


Victoria went 2/5=40.0% on the powerplay, while the Blazers were 1/5=20.0%.


The Royals scratched 20-year-olds Ryan Gagnon and Jack Walker along with veterans Chaz Reddekopp, Jared Dmytriw, Ralph Jarratt, Ethan Price, Ryan Peckford, Blake Bargar and rookie Dylan Myskiw.


Victoria continues their pre-season road trip tomorrow in Kelowna with a contest vs. the Rockets at 7:05 p.m. The Royals will then head to Everett on Sunday to play the Tri-City Americans at 3:00 p.m. as part of the Silvertips Annual Pre-Season Classic.


The Royals’ lone home game this preseason is next Saturday on September 10th against the Vancouver Giants. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
