KENT, September 2, 2016 – Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell today announced defenseman Tyson Terretta has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the team.
“Tyson had a great summer and came to camp and pushed his way into contention to play this season,” said Farwell. “At 16-years old he is an excellent prospect and we look forward to watching him develop.”
Terretta, from High River, Alberta, played the 2015-16 season with the Rockyview Raiders Midget AAA team in the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League. Terretta appeared in 37 games and had 1 goal and 20 assists for 21 points with 76 penalty minutes.
Terretta was selected by the T-Birds in the sixth round, 147th overall, in the 2015 Bantam Draft. Terretta is the fifth member of the team’s 2015 Bantam Draft class to sign with the T-Birds joining Elijah Brown, Carl Stankowski, Connor Pyne and Dillon Hamaliuk.
By signing a WHL Standard Player Agreement Terretta is guaranteed a WHL Scholarship for every year he plays in the WHL. A player is able to attend any career enhancing institution of his choice, including universities, colleges, technical institutes, trade schools, or any other institution which will help the player achieve his academic and career goals.
For each season played in the WHL, a player receives a one year post-secondary scholarship, which includes: Tuition, Compulsory Fees and Required Textbooks.
The T-Birds start the preseason at 7pm tonight against the Everett Silvertips at the Everett Silvertips Holiday Inn Preseason Classic at Xfinity Arena. Classic play will continue with games on Saturday, September 3, at 3:00pmagainst the Tri-City Americans. The Classic concludes Sunday, September 4, at 11:30am against the Spokane Chiefs.
The T-Birds next preseason appearance will be in Kennewick at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament at the Toyota Center. The T-Birds will play the Kootenay Ice on Friday, September 9, at 3pm and face the Tri-City Americans on Saturday, September 10, at 7:05pm
The T-Birds will conclude their preseason schedule with a home-and-home series against the Silvertips. The T-Birds host the Silvertips on Friday, September 16, at 7:35pm at ShoWare Center and then are in Everett onSaturday, September 17 at 7:05pm.
The T-Birds open the 2016-17 season in Portland against the Winterhawks on Saturday, September 24, at 7:00pm in Portland.
The T-Birds home opener for the 2016-17 season is Saturday, October 1, against the Portland Winterhawks at 7:05pm at ShoWare Center.
