EVERETT, September 3, 2016 – The Tri-City Americans defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-3 Saturday afternoon in a preseason game at the Everett Silvertips Holiday Inn Preseason Classic at Xfinity Arena.
This was the T-Birds second game at the Classic. They beat the Everett Silvertips 3-1 Friday night. The Classic concludes Sunday at 11:30amagainst the Spokane Chiefs.
Tri-City went in front 1-0 at 14:58 of the first period on a goal by Juuso Valimaki. A cross crease pass by Valimaki hit a T-Bird player and slid past Seattle goalie Logan Flodell. Brett Leason and Jordan Roy had the assists.
Seattle outshot Tri-City 12-7 in the first period.
The Americans took a 2-0 lead at 8:22 of the second period on a goal by Parker AuCoin. Sasha Mutala and Nolan Yaremko had the assists.
Nolan Volcan cut the Americans lead to one at 9:50 of the second. Volcan put a low wrist shot past Tri-City goalie Beck Warm. Ethan Bear had the only assist on the goal.
The T-Birds tied the game 2-2 at 10:46 of the second on a goal from MacKenzie Wight. Tyson Terretta found Wight all alone in front of the Tri-City goal. Wight beat Warm over the glove.
Tri-City took the lead back at 13:19 of the second on a power-play goal from Keltie Jeri-Leon. Lukin and Roy had assists.
Tri-City outshot Seattle 11-9 in the second period. Seattle led 21-18 in total shots after two periods.
Kurtis Rutledge put the Americans up 4-2 at 3:34 of the third period. Valimaki and Carson Focht had the assists.
Seattle cut the lead back to one at 12:53 of the third on Alexander True’s first preseason goal. True beat Warm with a wrist shot from the right circle with Nick Holowko screening the goalie.
Riley Sawchuk scored an empty-net goal at 18:23 of the third to seal the win for the Americans.
Seattle outshot Tri-City 15-11 in the third period and 36-29 in the game.
Flodell made 25 saves on 28 shots.
Warm made 33 saves on 36 shots.
The T-Birds next preseason appearance will be in Kennewick at the Red Lion Hotels’ Preseason Tournament at the Toyota Center. The T-Birds will play the Kootenay Ice on Friday, September 9, at 3pm and face the Tri-City Americans on Saturday, September 10, at 7:05pm
The T-Birds will conclude their preseason schedule with a home-and-home series against the Silvertips. The T-Birds host the Silvertips on Friday, September 16, at 7:35pm at ShoWare Center and then are in Everett onSaturday, September 17 at 7:05pm.
The T-Birds open the 2016-17 season in Portland against the Winterhawks on Saturday, September 24, at 7:00pm in Portland.
The T-Birds home opener for the 2016-17 season is Saturday, October 1, against the Portland Winterhawks at 7:05pm at ShoWare Center.
