It will be all hands on deck for Canada to reach the CONCACAF “Hex” in 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Qualifiers on Tuesday 6 September in Vancouver. #CanadaRED will be more important than ever with their unwavering home support that lifts Canada Soccer’s national teams.
“The crowd has been a big boost and I believe that the fans will be our rock to reach the “Hex” on Tuesday,” said Benito Floro, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Head Coach. “It’s in our hands, if we can push through and reach the Hex we will be that much closer to Russia 2018.”
On the final night of the CONCACAF semi-final stage, third-place Canada will need to beat El Salvador while perfect Mexico will need to beat second-place Honduras. Along with those two results, Canada will need to make up a combined five-goal difference and, if still tied with Honduras, finish with more goals scored on the six-match round.
The Canada-El Salvador match kicks off at 19.00 local at BC Place, with tickets available at www.canadasoccer.com/tickets. The match will be broadcast live on TSN and RDS2 at 22.00 ET / 19.00 PT. The Mexico-Honduras match kicks off at the same time at Estadio Azteca.
After five matches, Mexico are perfect with 15 points (+12 goals difference), Honduras are second with seven points (0 goals difference and six goals scored), Canada are third with 4 points (-5 goals difference and two goals scored), and eliminated El Salvador are last with 2 points (-7 goals difference).
“We just have to go and push for it,” said Atiba Hutchinson, Canada’s captain for Tuesday night. “We have to make sure we are composed and come out flying. We have to have a very good start and just be very dominant.”
Canada fought hard against Honduras under an oppressive heat and an intimidating crowd in San Pedro Sula. Canada scored first and goalkeeper Milan Borjan made several outstanding saves before Honduras won the match in the second half. Should Canada and Honduras be tied on points, goals difference, and goals scored, it will be Manjrekar James’ Friday afternoon away goal that breaks the tie difference in Canada’s favour.
In home-and-away league format, the ranking of teams in each group is based on the following criteria
- Points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss)
- Goal difference currently 5 behind
- Goals scored they have 6 to our 2
- Points in matches between tied teams tied at 3 each
- Goal difference in matches between tied teams tied
- Goals scored in matches between tied teams tied as we each have two
- Away goals scored in matches between tied teams (if the tie is only between two teams) our one goal gives us the advantage
- Play-off match(es) on neutral ground (if approved by FIFA Organizing Committee), with extra time and penalty shoot-out if necessary
