Hawks Fall 5-4 in Preseason Shootout to Everett


The Portland Winterhawks fell 5-4 in a shootout to the Everett Silvertips Thursday in a game played in Kennewick, WA.

The Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the first, starting 3:55 into the game on a goal by Bronson Sharp to open the scoring. A little later in the period, the Hawks struck twice in a span of 31 seconds when Ty Kolle and Sharp, with his second, scored in quick succession to give Portland a 3-0 lead at the 7:34 mark.

Everett’s Connor Dewar scored at 17:17 as the Hawks took a 3-1 advantage into the second.

Portland extended the lead 12:24 into the second when Evan Weinger scored his second of the preseason to make it 4-1. The Silvertips got it back at 17:58 on a goal by Eetu Tuulola as they cut Portland’s lead to 4-2 heading into the third.

Everett’s Brian King scored twice in the third to tie the game and set up overtime. After a scoreless five minutes, the game went to a shootout.

Each team scored once in the first three rounds, sending the shootout to extra frames. In the sixth round, the Silvertips’ Devon Skoleski scored to give Everett the victory.

The preseason continues tomorrow when the Hawks play Prince George at 1 p.m. tomorrow before closing out the exhibition season Saturday against Kootenay at 11 a.m. Both of those games will take place in Kennewick. The Hawks open the regular season on Saturday, September 24 at the Moda Center against the Seattle Thunderbirds at 7 p.m.
