Portland Winterhawks defeated the Prince George Cougars

The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Prince George Cougars 3-1 Friday in a preseason game played in Kennewick, WA.

After a scoreless first period, Prince George got on the board with a power play marker from Justin Almeida to make it 1-0 at the 9:49 mark of the second. The Cougars then made a change in net, with Taylor Gauthier taking over between the pipes for Ty Edmonds.

With the teams playing 4-on-4, Portland responded with two goals in the span of a minute to take a 2-1 lead. Colton Veloso tied it at 1-1 at 16:12 after he banged in a pass from Ryan Hughes. Then 43 seconds later, Alex Overhardt redirected the puck past Gauthier to make it 2-1 heading into the third.

Tanner Nagel sealed the victory with an empty net goal with 1:03 remaining to give the Hawks the 3-1 win.

Cole Kehler picked up his third win of the preseason with 16 saves on 17 Prince George shots.

Portland closes out the preseason tomorrow against Kootenay at 11 a.m. in Kennewick. The Hawks open the regular season on Saturday, September 24 at the Moda Center against the Seattle Thunderbirds at 7 p.m.
