VANCOUVER, BC – Whitecaps FC 2 (11W-8L-9D) will have to wait another week to clinch a spot in the USL Playoffs after going down to 10 men and suffering a 2-0 loss to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (13W-8L-7D) on Sunday afternoon at Thunderbird Stadium.
Luke Vercollone scored both goals for the Switchbacks, who punched their postseason ticket with the win.
WFC2 made eight changes to the lineup from the previous match, featuring a young side including 21-year-old Chilean Christopher Diaz, who was making his first home start. He slotted into the back line, alongside Elliot Green and Deklan Wynne, and centre back Sem de Wit, who wore the captain’s armband in the absence of Kyle Greig, who served a one-match suspension due to yellow card accumulation.
The ‘Caps went a man down early, as Matthew Baldisimo was shown a straight red card for a tackle in the 17th minute.
Even so, it was WFC2 who had the best chance of the half. In the 25th minute, Diaz played the ball up to Daniel Haber deep in the Switchbacks end. Haber lofted the ball into the box, but Thomas Sanner just missed the header.
Colorado Springs caused trouble early in the second, with midfielder Taesong Kim blasting a shot from just inside the box. De Wit got a shin to the ball on the line, keeping the visitors off the scoreboard.
The Switchbacks converted on their next chance just minutes later, as a low cross from Jordan Burt found Vercollone’s head. Directing the ball past WFC2 goalkeeper Marco Carducci, the visitors found themselves a goal up with a half hour left to play.
Vercollone doubled the lead for Colorado Springs in the dying minutes, as he beat Carducci from the top of the six-yard box, tapping the ball into the bottom-right corner. His second goal of the match would make the final score, 2-0.
Whitecaps FC 2 are back at it next Sunday, September 18 when they host Cascadia rival Timbers 2 for Youth Soccer Appreciation Day and the final regular season match at Thunderbird Stadium, before wrapping up the season at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley on the following Wednesday, September 21.
