RIO DE JANEIRO – Arinn Young of Legal, Alta., and Cindy Ouellet of Quebec City combined for more than half of Canada’s scoring as they help put the women’s wheelchair basketball team back on the winning track at the Paralympic Games.
The Canadians defeated Brazil 82-49 to caps their preliminary round record at three wins and a loss. Young notched 22 points while Ouellet added 20.
Germany and Britain were also 3-1 in pool A but ranked first and second on the tie breaking procedure. Canada now advances to the quarterfinal against the Netherlands which was second in pool B also at 3-1. That match is on Tuesday.
In athletics, Pamela LeJean of Cape Breton, N.S. was fourth in the women’s F53 shot put. Tonight Austin Smeenk of Oakville, Ont., challenges for a medal in the T34 100-m.
Five Canadian swimmers reached finals in Monday’s heats. They are: Nathan Stein of Surrey, B.C., and Alec Elliot of Kitchener, Ont., in the men’s S10 100-m butterfly, Samantha Ryan of Saskatoon in the women’s S10 100-m butterfly and Sarah Mehain of Vernon, B.C., and Tess Routliffe of Caledon, Ont., in the women’s S7 50-m butterfly.
“That was actually a really bad swim for me,” said Elliot. ”I had a bad touch to the wall and I was not nearly fast enough. I’m hoping for a better first 50m tonight and to bring it back a little stronger.”
In archery, Karen Van Nest of North Bay, Ont., and Kevin Evans of Jaffray, B.C. opened the mixed team compound event with a victory over Spain but lost in the quarterfinal to China.
The Canadian men’s goalball team dropped to 1-2 in a high-scoring 17-13 loss to Algeria. They are currently tied for third in their pool with Algeria and Germany. The top-four from each pool advances. Canada closes out the prelims Tuesday against Sweden.
In wheelchair fencing, Pierre Mainville of St-Colomban, Que., went 1-3 in the prelims to advance to the quarterfinals where he lost 15-6 to Panagiotis Triantafyllou of Greece.
