September 16, 2016 Langford, BC (ISN) – The JV and Varsity Belmont Bulldogs concluded their preseason tuneup with a pair of wins over the visiting Ballenas Whalers of Parksville Friday night at Goudy field in Langford to set their 2016 BC High School season in motion.
For both Bulldog teams, the pair of wins mark the first of the year after the JV’s, fell 35-21 last weekend to Vancouver’s Lord Tweedsmuir, and the Varsity side, getting one extra test before the regular season commences, would fall to Seattle Prep (49-22) and Lord Tweedsmuir (24-14).
In the warm up game, the Junior Varsity Bulldogs would claim a 21-7 victory. Receiver Carter Price would record two Td’s in the game, one through the air on a strike from starting QB Kalen Jules, and another on a 40 yard catch and run play from Jules to beat the Ballenas secondary taking the rock to the house. Jacob Steele would add another on the ground to lift the canines to their first win of the 2016 season.
Both the Bulldogs and the Whalers would come out slow offensively as a strong defensive game would lock down both sides into a field battle in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs would take the first major of the game to start the second quarter when Jules would find receiver Carter Price free in the end zone over the middle from twenty yards out. The Ballenas Whalers would attempt a push back on a successful ground attack marched down field by Whalers shifty QB Ben Chomolok. Chomolok, with no shortage of running support in his backfield, was equally comfortable running the ball keeping the Bulldogs defense on their toes. The Whalers would be rewarded for their efforts, replying to the Belmont TD with one of their own. A successful conversion attempt would give the Whalers their only lead in the game 7-6.
Despite the running efforts by Whalers Kolby Jack out of the backfield, that lead would stand until the fourth quarter when the Bulldogs would score two unanswered TD’s by Jared Steele, on a catch and run play, and another by Carter Price, after a fumble recovery by Damien Bursey to set up his second of the game, a 40 yard catch and run play from Jules for the 21-7 win.
Varsity Bulldogs 21-0 over Whalers
In the varsity matchup, the senior Bulldogs would run the table, scoring three unanswered TD’s to the multi-positional player Eli Nelms-Horton and a pair to RB Brett Milligan to shut out the Whalers 21-0 for their first win of the preseason.
Belmont QB Darian Jules would go head to head against Whalers Ben Robinson to control the field of play. Jules and the Bulldogs would find the advantage early in the second quarter after a defensive battle left both teams looking for a way through to the end zone.
Belmont’s 6’4” Eli Nelms-Horton would be the first to solve the puzzle, using his legs to sprint sixty-five yards on an catch and run play to the house to start the second quarter up 6-0.
Both sides would continue turn away the passing play with their defensive line pressure and secondary defense to virtually shut down any successful air attack. Teams would go to the locker room at halftime with Belmont holding a slim 6-0 lead.
Teams would bend, but not break through the third quarter of play despite the efforts off Whalers QB Robinson to take the ball for yards and away from the forward pressure of Bulldogs D-line. Robinson and his Whalers would find successes in the third, but would only be allowed to the Bulldog redzone twice in the second half, unable to find a path to into the endzone.
The Bulldog’s RB 6’0 200 lb Brett Milligan would start to find success late in the third quarter. Punishing would-be Whaler tacklers, Milligan would give his team field position after running the ball forty yards, bouncing off Ballenas tacklers on his way to extending the Belmont field. Rewarded for his efforts, Milligan would get that ball back on the one-yard line, carrying it in for his first of two majors in the half.
With momentum swinging in favor of the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter of play, the Bulldog’s Jules would throw a well-placed, downfield strike to Treshawn Bryden who would pull down the pass, showing exceptional body control to put both feet inbounds at the one-yard line. Milligan would close the game’s scoring, darting in from the one-yard line for the 21-0 win.
A late Ballenas strike by Robinson down field would threaten to erase the shut out win but time would expire with out result.
Belmont will start regular season play next Thursday, September 22nd when the JV Bulldogs host Lord Tweedsmuir. The Varsity Bulldogs will travel to South Delta September 24th in a weekend match up that is sure to test Belmont on both sides of the ball.
