SEATTLE – Trinity Western’s Declan White (South Surrey, B.C.) made a strong early statement on the trails, as the fourth-year Spartan finished first in the University of Washington’s Sundodger Open Saturday at Lincoln Park.
Competing in TWU’s first individual cross country race of the season, White became the first Spartan male to top the open field, finishing with a winning time of 23:59.90 over eight kilometres.
After White, the Spartans put three others in the top 11, with Joel De Schiffart (Nanaimo, B.C.) finishing fifth (24:27.40), Caleb de Jong (Winnipeg) coming across in seventh (24:34.00) and Levi Neufeld (Winnipeg) crossing the line 11th (24:44.90). Nick Colyn (Langley) was TWU’s fifth finisher in 25:03.90, which was good for 23rd.
As a team, the Spartans also finished first in the open race, bettering Alaska Anchorage (2nd), UBC (3rd) and SFU (4th).
The Spartans return to action Oct. 8 when they compete in the Western Washington Classic in Bellingham, Wash.
Last year, the now-graduated Blair Johnston (White Rock, B.C.) led TWU with a third place finish in the open race.
