COURTENAY, B.C. – Zachary Ahola scored the game winner with 36 seconds remaining in double overtime to lift the Comox Valley Glacier Kings to a 4-3 win over the Victoria Cougars on Saturday.
Playing three aside, Caleb Dolman broke into the offensive zone and alertly slid a cross-ice pass over to Ahola who was wide open on the play. Ahola made a nifty deke on Anthony Ciurro before sliding the puck home for his second goal of the season.
Glacier Kings rookie sensation Finn Withey notched the equalizer on an extended power play with 55 seconds left in regulation to send the game to extra time.
Kenny Britton had received an automatic game misconduct and instigating and fighting penalties at the 17:55 mark for his role in jumping Noah Gregory behind the Comox Valley net.
The two teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes before the Glacier Kings took the lead on a James Severs buzzer beater to end the second period.
Third period goals from Wyatt Elmer and Mitch Popp would give Victoria its first lead of the game only to have it evaporate in the late stages.
The Cougars outshot Comox Valley 37-29.
Withey and Grayden Hohl exchanged first period power play goals.
Victoria went 1-for-7 with the man advantage. The Glacier Kings finished 2-for-9.
