VICTORIA – Laura Ferreira led the way for the Vikes women’s golf team on Day 1 of the Coastal Collegiate Classic, shooting a seven-over-par 78 to help the team lock down second place heading into Day 2 on Tuesday.

Fereirra and the women’s team sit eight shots behind Oregon Tech, who registered a 40-over-par 324 in round one. After her performance on Monday, Ferreira sits tied for first place with the College of Idaho’s Natalie Mullins

The Vikes were rounded out by Nicole Gargarella, Rhiannon Jones and Melanie Murchison, who finished in third, tenth and seventeenth, respectively. Gargarella shot nine-over-par while Jones and Murchison came in at 14-over-par and 18-over-par.

“Pretty satisfied with the women’s play today, especially Laura’s steady team-leading 78 and Nicole’s back nine,” said head coach Justin Clews. “This is a relatively tough course for the girls with many holes with elevated greens.”

With Corban University on their tail, the Vikes aren’t guaranteed a top-two finish heading into the second and final day, although they’ve put themselves in a position to battle for first place.

“We’re only eight shots back of the lead heading into tomorrow and we should be relatively content with that considering we are counting all four scores,” said Clews, noting that the fifth Vike couldn’t make it due to illness.

“We need to ‘crack the whip’ and get those girls to chip away that eight stroke deficit,” added Dave Rands, Vikes assistant coach.
