Vikes head to Calgary with momentum from opening weekend

Tale of the Weekend

A pair of games in Calgary await a Vikes team that is looking to register their first victory of the season.  The games will be on September 24 and 25 with identical start times of 10:00 a.m.

The Vikes won all four games that the played against the Dinos last season. The most recent of those victories was a 4-0 win at home in Victoria.

Last Time Out

The Vikes sent a message in their opening games of the season.

Two straight 1-1 ties against the defending national champion UBC Thunderbirds proved that this version of the Vikes is more than willing to go toe-to-toe with any team in the nation.

Rosie Beale and Lindsay Cole provided the goals for the Vikes, while the strong defence was a total team effort.

“From the defence to the midfield and up to the forwards we did a really good of pressuring them and working together as a unit. That’s the only way we will be successful moving forward,” said Vikes head coach Lynne Beecroft.

The Dinos had a bye last weekend, so the games against UVic will be the first of the season for them.

The Dinos had a tough 2015 campaign, losing all eight games on their Canada West schedule. Although all eight of those games were played against either UBC or UVic, teams that finished first and second in the nation last year.

By the Numbers

2012: The last year that the Vikes failed to defeat the Dinos. The Vikes have won the last 15 meetings between the teams.

1994/95: The last time the Vikes were able to repeat as Canada West champions.

6: The number of times the Dinos were shutout in eight games last season.

Coach’s Take
Lynne Beecroft, Vikes head coach

If we can get into the mindset of being happy with the small things and then working hard to grow those small things larger and larger than we will be competitive right until the very end.”

“It’s not about being perfect it’s about putting in the effort every time you’re out on the field. Start small, keep working on the process and get better every game.”
