Tale of the Weekend
It will be the first game on home turf for the Vikes men’s rugby team September 23, when they take on the Westshore Valahllians. The game will be played under the lights at Wallace field with a scheduled start time of 6:30 p.m.
The Vikes won all three contests that they played against Westshore last year, including a 53-44 victory in the Vikes last game before the Barnard Cup.
Last Time Out
The season didn’t get off to the start that the Vikes would have wanted. They dropped their opening game of the season 36-26 to James Bay.
“”You can’t give up 36 points, so defensively we need to be better. It comes down to unforced errors, we can’t be making errors inside our own half, we have to dig down a little bit more. The teams in this league will turn our errors into points,” said Vikes head coach Doug Tate on the loss.
Westshore is also coming into the game after an opening weekend loss. The Valhallians were shutout by the Castaway Wanderers 34-0.
By the Numbers
168: The number of points that the Vikes scored in their three games against Westshore last season.
4: The number of Vikes that scored a try in their first game of the season.
Doug Tate, Vikes head coach
“It won’t be easy, they’re a pretty good team and actually could have been leading at half in their game last week. They’ve got some good up and coming young players. Overall they’re a better team this year, they can run with you. We’re going to have to play well on Friday.”
“With a veteran team like we have, most of the guys have played together. I’m excited about seeing them take over and making good adjustments on the field. Once the game starts there’s not much you can do coaching rugby, it’s when the players take over that I get excited as a coach.”
