ESQUIMALT, B.C. – Goals from Wyatt Elmer, Owen Dalman, and James Scott sent the Victoria Cougars to a 3-1 win over the Kerry Park Islanders on Thursday.
Justin Anderson, who was making his VIJHL debut, made 25 saves.
Victoria (3-1-0-1) has now earned five points in its last three games and leapfrogged over the Islanders into second place in the South Island Division.
Also making his VIJHL debut for the Cougars was forward Matthew Rokosh.
Chase Anderson turned aside 34 shots as Kerry Park (3-2-0-0) lost for the first time since dropping its season opener back on September 7.
Jarrett Malloch’s power play goal with 38 seconds remaining in regulation spoiled Anderson’s shutout bid.
Victoria went 0-for-2 on the man advantage; meanwhile, the Islanders finished 1-for-3.
In Nanaimo, Marcus Gloss scored a first period empty net goal while making 33 saves in net to lead the Comox Valley Glacier Kings past the hometown Buccaneers 6-3 in a penalty-filled game.
Next game for Victoria is Friday, September 23 versus the Saanich Braves. Game time at George R. Pearkes Recreation Centre, located at 3100 Tillicum Road, is 6:30 p.m.
