VICTORIA—Temitope Ogunjimi scored two tries and Elysa Sandron was clutch with conversions to lead the Calgary Dinos over the UVic Vikes in the Jenny Vincent memorial game, September 23.

Gabrielle SenftGurpreet Dhaliwal and Maddy Graham all scored for the Vikes.

The game started off with neither team willing to budge an inch, both the Vikes and the Dinos packed the middle of the field when the other team had the ball.

The first breakthrough of the match came from the first sustained pressure of the game.

The Vikes marched the ball down to the Calgary try line and while the Calgary defence did their best to hold firm, eventually the Vikes broke through as Gabby Senft scored the first points of the game.

UVic doubled their lead soon after. This time it was Maddy Graham that crossed the try line for the Vikes. Some nice passing from the Vikes ended with Sya Trafford spotting Graham out wide and feeding her with the perfect pass.

The Dinos weren’t going away without a fight though. Temitope Ogunjimi turned on a burst of speed that took the Vikes defence by surprise and she sprinted all the way in for the try. Elysa Sandron nailed the conversion from the middle of the field.

After a successful Sandron penalty evened the score it looked like the teams were destined to head into half tied 10-10.

The Vikes were determined to regain their lead though, and a booming kick from Jess Neilson went out wide to an open Senft who scored her second try of the game.

The Vikes came out in the second half determined to add to their lead and they were able to do just that. More nice passing from the Vikes enabled Gurpreet Dhaliwal to drift away from the Dinos defence and score her first try of the season.

The momentum of the game all changed when Ogunjimi found herself free for the second time in the game. As soon as she had a bit of space, she was off to the races again, scoring her second try of the game.

The Dinos would take the lead just minutes later when the pressure that they were putting on the Vikes defence paid off with a try scored by Coralyn Cafaro.

Elysa Sandron secured the game for Calgary when she intercepted a Vikes pass and outran the Vikes defence over almost the entire length of the field to score her first try of the year.

The Dinos will now head to Vancouver to play the UBC Thunderbirds on September 25.

The Vikes will have some time off to rest and recover before they host the Alberta Pandas September 30.
